Citizenship Today: Vicissitudes and Promise
The recent “citizenship turn” in the social sciences has yielded a vast and rapidly growing body of literature. This essay divides that literature into four categories or discourses: inclusion, withdrawal, erosion, and expansion. After a general overview of citizenship studies, the essay defines these categories and discusses the most important recent work in each.
