Does Choice Reviews Online include other features from Choice magazine?
Yes! Version 2 of Choice Reviews Online includes the full text of all editorial and advertising content from each monthly issue. That means bibliographic essays, feature articles, editorials, and print advertisements. In addition, online-only ads and two Web Extras that do not appear in the print Choice are available each month: Editors’ Picks and Hot Topics.
Is there a fee for using Choice Reviews Online?
A limited amount of information is available for free, but to search reviews and make full use of Choice Reviews Online, you need a subscription. Current subscription rates are listed at http://www.ala.org/acrl/choice/howtoorder/2011rates. Institution-wide subscriptions are usually arranged through a library. Contact your library to see if your institution already has a subscription. If not, you may register for a free trial at http://www.cro2.org.
What can I see for free?
Most–but not all–editorial and advertising content from the current monthly issue displayed on the Home page (http://www.cro2.org) may be browsed for free, without a subscription. From the Current Issue page, you can change the monthly issue to any of the last three months, and some editorial content there is available for free. Forthcoming Titles lists, linked from the left panel, and Web Exclusives are also free.
Do you offer free trials to Choice Reviews Online?
Yes. Individuals may register for a free two-month trial by clicking on the Click Here for a Free Trial button at the top right of the screen. After you have filled out the form, click Submit Trial Registration. You should get a pop-up message immediately saying that your account has been activated. You may use your username and password immediately to log in. You do not need to give any payment information to obtain a free trial, and your trial subscription will not be automatically converted to a paid subscription.

How will I know when my free trial time is up?
Choice customer service will notify you shortly before your trial is up.
Do I need to cancel the free trial?
No, you do not need to cancel the free trial. It will not be converted automatically to a paid subscription.
Why should I register to use Choice Reviews Online?
If you register, you will be able to use the full personalization features of Choice Reviews Online, including saving lists of reviews, saving search strategies, and creating a profile to receive monthly notification of new reviews in particular areas.
Register as a member or free trial user by clicking the REGISTER here to create your profile link near the top of the right panel and filling in the form.
How do I get a password?
You can create your own username and password when you register for a free trial subscription or when you register as a member. After registering, you should receive a pop-up message saying that your account has been activated. You should also receive an email confirmation message. You may use your username and password to log in immediately to Choice Reviews Online.
How should I fill out the Profile information?
Creating a Profile allows you to easily view new reviews tailored to your interests each month. Using the Profile form, you indicate your topics of interest; then you may limit the topics by readership level, Choice recommendation, or format. Detailed information on Profile is available by clicking the Help link at the top right of the Choice Reviews Online My Profile page.
Can I change my registration information?
You may update your contact information at any time by going to My Profile and making a change in the form.
Can I share my login information?
We advise against sharing login information, as others will have access to your personalized profile, lists, and saved searches. Other users who are within an institution that has a subscription to Choice Reviews Online may easily and freely register as personal members. Potential users without an institutional subscription may register for a free trial.
ACCESSING THE SERVICE
What is the correct URL for Choice Reviews Online?
Access Choice Reviews Online at http://www.cro2.org.
Can I access Choice Reviews Online from my home computer, or just at work?
If your institution has a subscription to Choice Reviews Online and can authenticate a remote connection through a proxy server, you should be able to browse and search in Choice Reviews Online from a remote Internet-enabled computer. If you have registered as a member and can log in with a username and password, you will be able to browse, search, print, and email, and use all the personalized features.
What browser does Choice Reviews Online work best with?
Choice Reviews Online works best with Internet Explorer. If you notice that something is not working correctly with your browser, please notify Choice using the User Feedback button in the middle part of the right panel. Select Report Error under the Select a Subject dropdown menu.
Please note that for all browsers, you must disable pop-up blocking for the http://www.cro2.org site. You must disable the pop-up blocker on your browser and security software to print, e-mail, and download from the CRO site. Also check your toolbar settings (e.g., Google toolbar); again, you may have to turn off the pop-up blocker. In order to use the personalized functions (My Monthly Reviews, saving search strategies, and My Lists,) you will need to be logged in with your username and password.
When Choice Reviews Online tells me that I can’t view the page I have requested until I log in–and then I log in–why do I have to start from the home page again?
We are working on getting the system to trace your activity before login and hope to have this fixed soon. In the meantime, we recommend that you register and log in any time you intend to use the service.
When do I need to log in?
There are two levels of login on Choice Reviews Online: Institutional and Member. If your institution has a subscription to Choice Reviews Online and you are accessing the service through an authenticated server, you may be automatically connected as soon as you go to www.cro2.org. If not, click the Login to CRO link. You may browse issues and search reviews in Choice Reviews Online without logging in as a Member. You may print, e-mail, or download reviews and articles. But you need to log in as a Member to use any of the personalized features of Choice Reviews Online (saving lists of reviews, saving search strategies, using My Monthly Reviews, or creating a profile to receive the monthly e-mail notification of new reviews in particular areas).
When do I need to log out?
You should log out using the Logout from CRO link whenever you finish a session–this frees up a seat so that other users in your institution can access CRO. If in this session you have logged in as a Member to use personalized features, you will first need to click the Logout from My Password link. Then you will be presented the option to Logout from CRO. You need to click here as well to enable another user to get on.
I’m entering my username and password, but I get rejected. What can I do?
First, completely delete any typing in the username and password boxes and re-enter your login information. If you still get rejected, try closing the browser and starting again. If you are still rejected and you are sure you are using the correct login information, contact Choice Customer Service using the User Feedback button midway down the right panel, and select Password Assistance from the dropdown Subject menu.
If you are unsure of your password, click the Forgot Your Password? link below Member Login, fill in either your login name or your email address, and click the Get Password button. Your password will be sent to the email address with which you are registered in Choice Reviews Online.
What is the timeout period? Can I re-set it?
The default timeout is 15 minutes; the uppermost limit in the timeout values is 180 minutes of inactivity. An institutional site administrator may contact Choice to adjust the timeout period to this point or below.
CURRENT ISSUE & MY MONTHLY REVIEWS
How do I know when the new issue is out?
Each monthly issue is loaded at mid-month the previous month (The September issue is loaded close to August 15, the October issue close to September 15, etc.). The current monthly issue is indicated on the Home Page and Current Issue page.
How can I look at the new reviews each month?
There are several options. Use the Browse Reviews option found half way down on the Current Issue page. Click on the + sign in front of each of Choice‘s four major subject groups to see the categories below them and click on one of the blue links. A Search Results page will show the current reviews in that category in bibliographical citation form. Change the dropdown Display menu to Full Text to see the reviews.
The subject categories and the reviews appear in the same hierarchical order as they do in the printed Choice.
If you have activated your Profile, you can use My Monthly Reviews to view the subset of reviews that match your profile.
Can I look at reviews that I missed last month?
Yes! From the Recent Issues dropdown box on the Current Issue page, select any of the three previous months’ issues to view the reviews in the same manner as you browse from the current month.
Can I select multiple Choice Subjects and Interdisciplinary Categories in My Profile?
Yes, simply click in the box in front of any category or subcategory in the Choice Subject Areas and the Interdisciplinary Categories. (Clicking a major category will automatically select all subcategories within it–you may remove categories by clicking to remove the check mark). Your selections will be connected with a Boolean OR to create the large universe of your Profile topics.
The titles in My Monthly Reviews don’t seem to match my Profile. What’s wrong?
Check your profile strategy. You create one large set of topics in Profile from Choice Subject Areas, Interdisciplinary Categories, LC Classification and Keyword(s) in Title. All your selections from these factors are OR’d together in Boolean fashion. Your selections from limiters (Readership Level, Choice Recommendations, and Format) limit the entire set of topics you have created and apply across the board to all of them.
You can experiment with your profile and then see the results immediately by clicking on My Monthly Reviews. If this is still not what you expected, try to adjust your profile. Detailed information on creating a Profile is available by clicking the Help link on the top right of the My Profile page.
If you need further help in constructing your profile, contact Choice by clicking on the User Feedback button midway down on the right panel of any page. Select Account/Profile Assistance from the Select a Subject dropdown menu on the User Feedback form.
How can I broaden the topics in My Profile?
You can broaden your topic pool by selecting more topics. Add Choice Subject Headings, Interdisciplinary Categories, more LC Classification codes, or more title keywords. All these factors are OR’d together to create your large topic pool.
For example, if you have selected Botany as a Choice Subject, you can broaden your topics by also selecting Biology-General.
You can also increase the numbers of reviews matching your topics by removing some or all of the limiters you may have placed on the topics. Readership Levels, Choice Recommendations, and Formats all function as limiters to decrease the number of titles you receive.
How can I narrow the topics in My Profile?
You can narrow your topic pool by choosing fewer topics. Remove Choice Subject Headings or Interdisciplinary Categories, narrow the LC Classification codes, or construct a tighter Keyword in Title search.
Can I limit My Profile to certain readership levels?
Yes, click in the checkbox of any of the seven Readership Levels to accept reviews at that level. You may select multiple levels; your selections will apply to all the topics that you have selected in your Profile.
Can I limit My Profile to Recommendation levels?
Yes, click in the checkbox of any of the five Choice Recommendation categories to accept reviews in that category. You may select multiple categories; your selections will apply to all the topics that you have selected in your Profile.
In what order do the reviews appear?
The default order for reviews appearing in My Monthly Reviews is by Choice Review Number. This places reviews by main entry order within Choice subject heading groups–in the same order as they appear in the printed Choice. You may rearrange the order by selecting a different priority from the Primary Sort and Secondary Sort dropdown boxes.
When browsing an entire month’s reviews in Current Issue, the reviews appear in the same order as in the print Choice: Reference first, followed by Humanities, Science & Technology, and Social & Behavioral Sciences. You cannot change the order of reviews in Current Issue.

Can I really see the entire monthly issue of Choice online?
Yes, version 2 of Choice Reviews Online includes the full text of all editorial and advertising content from each monthly issue of Choice–bibliographic essays, Forthcoming Titles lists, feature articles, editorials, and printed advertisements. In addition, online-only advertisements and two Web Extras that do not appear in the print Choice are available each month: Editors’ Picks and Hot Topics.
What are Hot Topics?
Hot Topics is a Web-only feature. Each month, Choice editors select reviews of titles from the Choice archive that shed light on a topic of current interest. Hot Topics appear on the Home page; they are also accessible via a link from the Current Issue page or by clicking the Web Exclusives button on the top navigation bar. Current and former Hot Topics are searchable from the Web Exclusives page; you may also use the Search Features button on the Advanced Search page to search for Hot Topics and other editorial features.
What are Editors’ Picks?
For each monthly issue, Choice editors select noteworthy titles from the broad spectrum of materials reviewed that current month to appear on the Home page and Web Exclusives page as Editors’ Picks. Current Editors’ Picks are also accessible via a link from the Current Issue page. Current and former Editors’ Picks are searchable from the Web Exclusives page; you may also use the Search Features button on the Advanced Search page to search for Editors’ Picks and other editorial features.
What are Forthcoming Titles Lists?
Choice editors compile forthcoming titles lists on a number of important subjects and interdisciplinary topics each year. These forthcoming titles lists are designed to provide timely information about new or soon to be released publications relevant to academic library collections and to assist librarians and faculty responsible for selection and collection development. In compiling these lists, Choice invites publishers to submit new title information. In addition, editors check publisher catalogs and prepublication announcements for appropriate titles for inclusion. Forthcoming Titles lists are available by clicking the Forthcoming Titles Lists button on the left panel. Use the Current dropdown to show the current list. Use the Previous Lists dropdown to select and show other recent lists.
Can I save Forthcoming Titles to a list?
No, at the current time, titles appearing in the popular Forthcoming Titles features are part of a text document and cannot be manipulated individually.
Can I see editorial features from earlier issues?
Yes, all editorial content from September 2005 and forward is available. You can browse articles from the current and most recent three issues by using the dropdown menu in Current Issue. You can also search editorial features from past issues back as far as September 2005–click Advanced Search in the top navigation panel, then click Search Features.
Why are some URLs not hyperlinked?
At the present time, editorial features are prepared for incorporation into Choice Reviews Online from the files used to prepare the print magazine, where the links are not live. In the future, when production processes are changed, you will see more active links in the editorial features.
SEARCHING FOR REVIEWS
When should I use Quick Search and when should I use Advanced Search?
Use Quick Search when you are searching on one factor only–either keywords in title, keywords in review text, a single author or editor, a publisher, a single Choice issue, an ISBN (either 10- or 13-digit), or a Choice review number. Quick Search is also an easy way to limit retrieval to materials reviewed in the current issue.
Use Advanced Search if you want to search on multiple characteristics within one search, and when you want to search on factors that are not available in Quick Search–Keyword in LC Subject, keywords anywhere in the record, LC Classification number, reviewer name or affiliation, Choice Subject Heading or Interdisciplinary categories. Also use Advanced Search if you want to limit retrieval by factors including copyright year, Choice review publication date, readership level, Choice recommendation, format, or Outstanding Academic Titles designation.
How should I search on Choice Issue Date in Quick Search?
Enter the date of the issue in an abbreviated Month and Year form:
Alternatively, you may use an abbreviated year and month form:
Either search will retrieve all the reviews from that particular monthly issue.
How can I find out if Choice has reviewed the book I wrote?
If you are the author of the book, use either Quick Search or Advanced Search and enter your name in the author box. Lastname first, followed by a comma and then firstname gives the most precise results. If you enter a name without a comma, the name may be retrieved from first or middle names.
How do I get a list of the works I’ve reviewed?
Use Advanced Search and, from the dropdown Search On box, select Reviewer Name. Type your name in the Search For box, lastname first and remembering that Choice reviewer bylines use only initials for given names. If your name may be confused with another reviewer’s, you may also want to combine your reviewer name search with a search on reviewer affiliation.
Can I search only for the Highly Recommended or Essential titles?
Yes; in Advanced Search, click in the boxes in front of the Essential and Highly Recommended Recommendation Levels. You will receive results that fulfill either of these two criteria. Note: March 2003 is the first issue in which recommendation levels were assigned as a discrete criterion; therefore using this limiter automatically restricts your search to March 2003 and later. To search reviews by recommendation level for earlier dates, try searching the terms using Keyword (in review) from the dropdown boxes at the top of the Advanced Search page.
Can I find out what books from a particular publisher have been reviewed?
Yes, in Quick or Advanced Search, select Publisher from one or more of the dropdown boxes and enter the name of your publisher(s) in the corresponding Search box. Note that Choice uses an abbreviated form of entry for many publishers (Pennsylvania for University of Pennsylvania Press, Pennsylvania State for Pennsylvania State University Press). Due to changes in the names of publishers over the years and to variant forms of entry, results may not be comprehensive.
What is the proper way to enter an ISBN when searching?
You may enter ISBNs with or without hyphens.
Why are the ISBN numbers in the bibliographic citation underlined?
When you roll your cursor over the underlined number, it will show that this is a hyperlink inviting you to click it to link to WorldCat to see if your local library has this book. When you click the link, Find in a Library will open in a separate browser window. Note that only those libraries that contribute to WorldCat and maintain a subscription to FirstSearch will have their holdings revealed in Find in a Library. Even if your library does not participate in Find in a Library, you can use the OCLC WorldCat service to get more detailed publication and cataloging information, book cover images, notes, and reviews, as available for each title.
Can I get a list of the current Outstanding Academic Titles?
Outstanding Academic Titles are announced in the January issue each year for reviews from the previous calendar year. Full lists of Outstanding Academic Titles for recent years are available through links on the lower part of the left panel from all pages.
You can limit a search to Outstanding Academic Titles in Advanced Search by clicking the Outstanding Academic Titles checkbox at the bottom of the search page. Currently system capacity does not permit retrieval of full years of Outstanding Academic Titles.
Outstanding Academic Titles are identified when they are displayed by the term Outstanding Title! in boldface near the end of the bibliographic citation.
Where can I see the reviews from the August Web issues?
From 1997 through 2006, the August Web issue was a free supplement or special issue to the 11-per-year Choice publication schedule. You can search for reviews from these issues in Advanced Search by selecting Aug YEAR (i.e., Aug 2006, Aug 2005, Aug 1997) in the Choice Issue box. Note that records retrieved from these issues will display with the notation: Reviewed in 2006sup CHOICE or other appropriate year from 1998 through 2006.
I did a search for the word Web in the title but it brought up a lot of titles that don’t include the search term.
Remember that Choice Reviews Online provides automatic stemming on the right, so that web will bring up World Wide Web, but also Webster, Max Weber, and Andrew Lloyd Webber. You can control stemming by enclosing the search term in quotation marks: “web” will only find web.
How should I search for a phrase?
Search for a phrase by enclosing the words in quotation marks. Example:
When a review references another title that Choice reviewed, how do I get to the review for that earlier title?
Currently you need to do a search for a cited title. The easiest way to do this usually is to highlight and copy the Choice Review Number from the citation, which consists of volume year and a sequential identifier. (example: 42-1981, 44-0986.) Use the Choice Review Number option from the dropdown menu in the Quick Search box to find the cited review. If this number is not available, search by author or title. There are plans for hyperlinking the cited review number in the future.
How do I search by LC Class number?
Enter LC numbers ranging from lowest to highest; include the upper-most number of the subclass(es) in which you are interested. Examples:
HB to HC9999 (retrieves items related to economics)
HD to HE (retrieves all items classified HD but not those classified HE)
PQ6000 to PQ8999 (retrieves items related to Spanish literature)
QE to QE9999 (retrieves items on geology)
Most–but not all–books reviewed in Choice are assigned LC classification numbers. Most Electronic Resources are not assigned LC numbers.
Below the list of LC subject headings on a full-text record, I followed the invitation to Click on Subjects Below to Find Similar Titles but I did not get the results I expected. What is wrong?
Choice Reviews Online cannot currently search the entire LC subject heading–it can only search the parts of a heading between the punctuation marks (dashes, commas, etc.) Click on the part of the subject heading that is most important to you. Example: With a heading such as “Glassware — Czechoslovakia — History”, click on Glassware if you want more works on glassware; click on Czechoslovakia if you want more works on Czechoslovakia.
How can I see the LC Subject Headings for a given title?
In Advanced Search, if you have searched on Keyword in LC Subject, you will be able to click on the underlined title.(from either Bib Cite or Full Review view) and see the LC subject headings within Choice Reviews Online.
At any time, an alternative way to see LC subject headings for a title is to click on the hyperlinked ISBN in the bibliographic citation of the record, go to Find in a Library on WorldCat, and see the headings there. You cannot perform an LC subject heading search in Choice Reviews Online from the WorldCat page.
What are Saved Search Strategies?
If you have performed a search that you want to repeat periodically, you can keep it as a Saved Search Strategy. From the Saved Search Strategy page, you will be able to rerun the search later with a single click. Consider creating saved search strategies as a supplement to your Profile and My Monthly Reviews for separate topics that you need to track regularly. You may also set up saved search strategies to keep tabs on all new books from a particular publisher or colleague, or all your own reviews.
How do I save a search strategy?
Saved Search Strategies are part of the personalization of Choice Reviews Online, so you must be a registered member and have logged in to save your strategy. First, using either Quick Search or Advanced Search, select search criteria and carry out your search. On the top right of the Search Results page there is a link called Save Search. Click that link and fill in the form with a search name and description. You may find it helpful later to indicate your strategy in the Description box when saving a search. Note: You will not be returned to a search results page after saving a search strategy. Use the navigation bars at the top or your browser back button to continue your session
How do I run a saved search?
After logging in, access your list of saved searches by clicking the Saved Search Strategies link underneath the Quick Search box at the top left of any page. (Alternatively, you may click the Saved Search Strategies button at the top right of the Advanced Search page.)
What does Format mean in Advanced Search?
Format refers to whether a reviewed item is print or digital. Currently, all items reviewed in Choice are either Books or Electronic Media. Electronic Media may be CD-ROM, DVD, e-books, or Internet Resources. You may limit an Advanced Search to Books Only, All Electronic Media, or Internet Resources Only. If you do not limit your search, reviews for all titles, regardless of format, will be retrieved.
How can I use Interdisciplinary Categories in searching?

You can search for one or more Interdisciplinary subject categories in Advanced Search, alone or in combination with other criteria. Interdisciplinary Categories are connected by a Boolean OR when searching. Note that Interdisciplinary Categories are searchable in Choice Reviews Online for different time periods. Here are the dates when each category came into use:

Where can I get additional help in searching Choice Reviews Online?
Click the User Feedback button midway down the right panel and send an email to Choice Customer Service.
If I get results that don’t seem right to me, how can I check my search strategy?
In Advanced Search, your search strategy appears at the top left of the page under the heading Search Strategy. Review that to see whether you need to enter or delete criteria. In some cases, when performing repeated searches, Choice Reviews Online holds criteria from a previous search request. In that case, you may want to click the Clear Search button and re-enter your desired criteria.
In what order are search results displayed?
The default sort order for search results is by Publication Year (descending) and then by Title (Ascending). You may use dropdown menus to change the Primary and Secondary sort order to any of several criteria: Title, Author, Publisher, Choice Subject, Format, LC Class, Choice Issue, and Choice Review Number.
Why do Internet Resources appear at the bottom of the list when I sort by Publication Year?
Internet Resources do not usually have a publication year; the field is blank and sorts at the bottom of the list since reviews are in order by descending year.
Sometimes when I sort records by title, they aren’t really in order. Why is that?
Choice Reviews Online recognizes and accommodates articles (a, an, the) at the beginning of words in English, but not in other languages. Internal formatting for diacritic codes and boldface or italics can also interfere with sorting occasionally.
Sorting by publisher doesn’t always show my records in the right order.
Publisher sorts will not always be neat and clean for two reasons: 1) Over the years there have been many name changes in publishers due to mergers, acquisitions and forms of entry; 2) Choice enters co-publications between two or more publishers in such a way that it is sometimes hard to bring the records together as you would like.
How should I use View Selected Records?
Use View Selected Records to collect and edit a group of records from a page of your search results. First check on one or more of the records on the search results page, then click the View Selected Records button. From the View Selected Records page, you can perform various functions, e.g., print or email. You can remove records from this page by unchecking them; click on View Selected Records again to view the edited list. You can also go back to the original search results page and click on more records to add.
How can I get to the last page in a large set of 900 records?
Currently it is a tedious process, as the 1-10 page jump links do not increment by more than a single page when you click the upper-most link. We are working to get this fixed.
What does the New from… link at the end of a bibliographic citation do?
Clicking the New From link will connect you to an ad in the Advertiser Index.
What does the More from… link at the end of a full review do?
Clicking the More from [this publisher] link performs an automatic search on the publisher’s name within the Choice Reviews Online database. This has the effect of erasing your current search and starting a new one. You can get back to your current search by using your browser’s Back button.
Nothing happens when I click on Print and on E-mail. What’s wrong?
You must disable pop-up blocking for www.cro2.org on your browser and security software before using Choice Reviews Online.
When I printed results I wanted the reviews, but I only got the bibliographic citations.
After you click Print on the Search Results page, be sure to check that the dropdown menu on the Print page says Full Review. Even if you were looking at a full review display prior to going to the Print page, you may have to change from Bib Cite to Full Review.
Can I email items to myself?
Yes, you may email items to your own address or to other colleagues. Separate multiple email address in the To: box with a semi-colon.
Why should I use lists and My Lists?
You can create a list to gather selected records from multiple pages of search results or from multiple searches. Lists will be stored for you even after you end your current session. You must be logged in as a member to use the list function.
How many lists can I have, and how many items on each list?
There is no limit to the number of lists you may create, or to the number of items on a list. Note, however, that you cannot print, email, or download more than 1000 items from a list at a time.
How do I get rid of a list when I am done with it?
Click on the My Lists navigation bar at the top of the screen. Your list names will appear in alphabetical order. Click to make a checkmark in the box in front of the list name that you want to delete and click the Delete button. You will get a confirmation message; click OK to confirm. After the list is deleted, you will be returned to your list of lists.
In what order are records displayed in lists?
Regardless of the order your search results were in when you created a list, records will be stored in the list in the system default order: Publication Year (descending) and then by Title (ascending). When working with lists, you may sort the records again by a variety of primary and secondary sorts and they will retain their sort order for printing and emailing.
Can I export records from Choice Reviews Online into my OPAC or ILS?
The Download function is being developed to enable exporting of records for these purposes. Currently, you can only download in Excel format, and reviews are not included.
Can I link to specific Choice reviews from my Web site?
Each review in Choice Reviews Online has a persistent link to facilitate linking from Web sites or emails. Users with institutional subscriptions who are working from a computer that can be automatically authenticated will be taken directly to the review when clicking on its persistent link. Users who are not within an authenticated IP range must be logged into Choice Reviews Online when clicking the link in order to go directly to the linked review. If they are not logged in, they will be taken only to the home page for Choice Reviews Online.
