Forthcoming Titles Lists
African American Studies, 2012: Recent & Forthcoming Titles. Choice, v.49, no. 06, February 2012.

This issue of Choice marks the tenth annual installment of African American studies in the popular “Forthcoming” series.  Regularly appearing each year in the February issue, this selected list, like the others in this series, is designed to provide information on new or about-to-be-published books of potential relevance for academic libraries.

In compiling this list, Choice invited publishers to submit title information for their 2012 publications.  Editors monitored publisher catalogs, websites, and book vendor Web pages to identify additional relevant titles.  This year’s list represents offerings from 58 publishers, a number that has hovered around the 60-publisher mark for the past few years.  The bibliographic information was supplied directly by publishers or obtained from publisher catalogs and promotional materials; data include anticipated release date, price, and ISBN when these were known.  Estimated prices and dates are followed by “e.”  As in all lists of this type, release dates, prices, and even titles are subject to change at a later date.

The 142 titles (about the same as last year’s total of 144 titles, but a decrease of slightly more than 8 percent from 2010’s 173 titles) are arranged by the usual Choice categories.  Although down from last year’s 55 titles, history continues to be the biggest group with 45 titles, just under one-third of the entire list.  Political science rises to second place this year with 18 titles, while longtime second-place subject sociology declines to third place with 13 titles.  Social sciences overall remains the largest category, with 87 titles, followed by humanities with 36 titles, and science and technology with 10.  The remaining nine are reference titles.

This feature would not exhibit the breadth and depth that it does without the participation of the publishers who responded to our call for submissions.  Choice offers sincere thanks to all who contributed to this list.
