| | | | Other Features | | Bjørner, Susanne. E-Products for Academic Libraries: 2011 Buying Guide. Choice, v.48, no. 12, August 2011. |
Susanne Bjørner, formerly
ChoiceReviews.online project editor, is an independent consultant providing services to publishers, authors, and librarians in Web-based and print media.
T
his annual Buying Guide feature, traditionally appearing in the August issue, has two purposes. First, it gives readers a convenient way to discover new Web-based products and updates to standard sources available for the academic market. Second, it offers the producers a no-charge venue in which they may tell librarians what they think is most important about their offerings. The Buying Guide remains on the Choice Reviews Online Web site throughout the year as a freely available public feature—you do not have to be a subscriber to see it. The CRO edition carries live links to all Web URLs in the entries, facilitating access to the company and product sites mentioned in each listing.
Nearly 40 companies answered the invitation to provide information about their upcoming new products and enhancements this year, and there are many new names. A big reason is the explosion in e-books. Several publishers are using this space to announce specific titles, while others tell you which vendors are handling their e-book distribution.
Academic publishers now actively use social media to keep users informed about the features of their products, and most entries include the company’s Facebook and/or Twitter address so you can easily catch up with specific vendors. Each entry in the guide carries a short company profile, written by the submitting company, followed by a statement of general pricing policy, directions for requesting free trials, and a section describing training, learning, and community opportunities sponsored by the company. Most entries also include smaller capsule listings of what’s new or being emphasized by the vendor. Specific products listed are those that have been or are expected to be introduced or substantially enhanced in 2011 or 2012.
Choice
thanks the companies that have given information for this directory, welcomes those who are new this year, and salutes those who continue to support this project yearly. We remind all that a call will go out next April for the 2012 annual directory.
