Compiled by Susanne Bjørner
This annual Buying Guide feature, traditionally appearing in the August issue, has two purposes. First, it gives readers a convenient directory of companies that produce Web-based resources for the academic market. Second, it offers the producers a no-charge venue in which they may tell librarians what they think is most important about their new and enhanced products. This is the fourth year that the Buying Guide is a freely available public feature—you do not have to be a subscriber to see it at
Choice Reviews Online
. The CRO edition carries live links to all Web URLs in the entries, facilitating access to the company and product sites mentioned in each listing.
Thirty-nine companies answered the invitation to provide information about their upcoming new products and enhancements this year. Not only is this up from the number last year, many of the contributors are new to the e-product directory. A big reason is the presence of e-books. We sent the invitation to the entire database of Choice publishers this year—not just to those we knew had electronic resources—on the theory that “everyone is publishing e-books now.” We weren’t wrong. Maybe it’s not everyone, but it’s very many.
A second, less positive trend this year, is that it seems, to this editor, that there are fewer new products in the pipeline. This is almost certainly a reflection of the downturn in the economy, noticed last year but strongly evident this year. Instead of announcing new works, many companies chose to concentrate on informing users of additions to the content or usability of current products, or to indicate changes in pricing strategies.
Another trend is the expansion of alerting via Web 2.0 sites by academic publishers. If you don’t see how to contact or keep up with a publisher on Facebook or Twitter in their listing below, you almost certainly will be able to find those links on the company Web page—which increasingly you may be able to catch on your iPhone.
Each entry in the ensuing guide consists of a short company profile written by the submitting company, followed by a statement of general pricing policy, directions for requesting free trials, and a section describing training, learning, and community opportunities sponsored by the company. Most entries also include smaller capsule listings of what’s new or being emphasized by the vendor. Specific products listed are those that have been or are expected to be introduced or substantially improved in 2010.
Choice
thanks the companies that have given information for this directory. welcoming those new this year and saluting those who continue to support this project yearly. We remind all that a call will go out next April for the 2011 annual directory.

The Public Value of the Humanities
, edited by Jonathan Bate
.
Availability Date: September 2010
http://www.BloomsburyAcademic.com
Why should governments invest public money funding research into ancient Greek tragedy, literary value, philosophical conundrums, or the aesthetics of design? Does such research deliver “value for money” and “public benefit”? Such questions have become especially pertinent in the UK and USA in recent years, in the context of discussions about “economic impact” and “knowledge transfer.” In this book a group of distinguished humanities researchers reflect on the public value of their discipline.

Struggle to Limit Government
, by John Samples
Availability Date: May 2010
http://store.cato.org/index.asp?fa=ProductDetails&method=&pid=ELEC-0088
This site assesses the highs and lows of the nearly thirty-year struggle to limit government, including Reagan’s successes and failures, the drift away from Reagan’s legacy, and George W. Bush’s rejection of limited government. The author shows that the elections of 2006 and 2008 were a repudiation of the failed Bush presidency, not limited government, and cautions both parties to ignore this idea at their peril.

Terrorizing Ourselves
explores disciplined approaches to terrorism and dismantles the flawed thinking that dominates today’s national security policy. It exposes how politicians manipulate fear for political purposes and shows how anxiety about terrorism is driving military adventurism, exploding the national debt, militarizing domestic affairs, and shifting expenditures away from other urgent priorities.

Bloodshed connected with Mexican drug cartels, how they emerged, and their impact on the U.S. is the subject of this frightening book. Savage narcotics-related decapitations, castrations, and other murders have destroyed tourism in many Mexican communities; such savagery is now cascading across the border into the United States. This book focuses on the relationship between public morality and personal action in the American political community. It emphasizes the responsibilities of citizens and government to find and confirm truth, looking to religious scripture and empirical events. Recognizing that we have a natural preference for distraction and distance from both sources of truth, author James Slack uses qualitative, open-ended interviews and direct observation to uncover the intimate consequences of life-taking in open societies. eISBN: 978-1-4128-1508-6.

is more than a socialist market economy led by ever more reform-minded leaders. It is a country whose people seek liberty on a daily basis. Their success has been phenomenal, despite the fact that China continues to be governed by a single party. Clear distinctions between the people and the government are emerging, underlining the fact that true liberalization cannot be imposed from above. Author Kate Zhou explores “grassroots modernization.” eISBN: 978-1-4128-1520-8.
