Firefly Books, 2012. 300p bibl index ISBN 1-77085-107-0, $49.95; ISBN 9781770851078, $49.95. Reviewed in 2013jun CHOICE. | | Dickinson is the author of over a dozen books in astronomy, including the highly recommended NightWatch (CH, Apr’99, 36-4467). At first glance, some readers might consider this a coffee table book with just a bunch of pretty pictures–the color images are very high quality–but the substantial captions for the images are extremely well written. Though readers can find many of the images online, they will not get the same lucid descriptions of the science behind the research of each astronomical object. The volume’s ten chapters provide a way for Dickinson to organize the work into different subject areas. He provides a small set of references to other books and websites at the end, but he does not reference any of the scholarly scientific literature. This book will be useful as a supplementary resource for students in introductory astronomy courses. Hopefully, it will motivate more students to learn about the amazing universe that they live in. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Lower-division undergraduates and general readers. — J. R. Kraus, University of Denver |
