[Visited Mar’11] Vimeo Video School succinctly and aptly teaches people how to make video–from choosing a camera to learning Macintosh and PC editing systems. Launched in December 2010 by the video-sharing Web site Vimeo, this is a “one-stop shop” for honing the craft and art of making video. Given the increase in student-made video assignments outside traditional creative arts disciplines, this site fills an important need for a resource that appeals to students. It also challenges the assumption that digital natives need not be taught media literacy skills. The site is extremely easy to navigate, graphically appealing, and completely free. It is organized into Lessons, made by Vimeo staff, and tutorial videos, submitted by Vimeo users. In addition to humorous and concise video tutorials, featured Lessons contain textual information and graphics to explain video concepts such as three-point lighting and the 180-degree rule.

The best part of the site is Video 101. These lessons for beginners break down the process of making a video into four steps: Choosing a Camera, Shooting Basics, Editing Basics, and Editing Details. Some lessons present video-making challenges. Users may upload their work, contributing to the sense of creative community that the larger Vimeo prides itself on. Users may browse (but not search individually) the Lessons and Tutorial Videos sections according to categories such as Lighting and Shooting. Making video can be complicated; a video artist needs to know about camera options, how to translate a story or an argument to a visually coherent narrative, the shoot and the edit, and the delivery of video over the Web. This site serves as a very good guide for anyone interested in learning an important 21st-century skill. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Lower- and upper-level undergraduates; general readers.
