Markovits, Andrei S.  Sportista: female fandom in the United States, by Andrei S. Markovits and Emily K. Albertson.  Temple, 2012.  258p index afp; ISBN 9781439909638, $84.50; ISBN 9781439909645 pbk, $28.95; ISBN 9781439909652 e-book, $28.95. Reviewed in 2012dec CHOICE.
Sport fandom, at least in the US, is generally perceived as dominated by men. Markovits (political science, Univ. of Michigan) and Albertson (graduate student, Univ. of Michigan) review research in psychology and sociology to explore the (often invisible) female sport fan--"sportista." The authors weave prior research into the narrative, along with interviews from self-described "sportistas," athletes, and journalists, to describe the cultural patterns, socialization, and prejudice surrounding female sport fans. They provide a comprehensive review and analysis of women's athletics, sport journalism, and difficulties women encounter in the gendered domain of sport. However, the authors fail to discuss the relatively large body of work conducted in psychology examining sport fans and using a social identity perspective. This omission aside, the book fills a gap in the fandom literature. Thought provoking and enjoyable to read, this book will interest readers in a variety of social scientific fields--e.g., psychology, sociology, history--as well as those interested in sports. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Lower-division undergraduates through faculty; general readers. -- S. Reysen, Texas A&M University-Commerce
